Hot Cracking Phenomena in Welds

Although the avoidance of hot cracking still represents a major topic in modern fabrication welding components, the phenomena have not yet been fully understood. Through the 20 individual contributions from experts all over the world the present state of knowledge about hot cracking during welding is defined, and the subject is approached from four different viewpoints. The first chapter provides an overview of the various hot cracking phenomena. Different mechanisms of solidification cracking proposed in the past decades are summarized and new insight is particularly given into the mechanism of ductility dip cracking. The effects of different alloying elements on the hot cracking resistance of various materials are shown in the second chapter and, as a special metallurgical effect, the initiation of stresscorrosion cracking at hot cracks has been highlighted. The third chapter outlines how numerical analyses and other modelling techniques can be utilized to describe hot cracking phenomena and how such results might contribute to the explanation of the mechanisms. Various hot cracking test procedures are presented in the final chapter with a special emphasis on standardization. For the engineering and natural scientists in research and development the book provides both, new insight and a comprehensive overview of hot cracking phenomena in welds. The contributions additionally give numerous individual solutions and helpful advice for international welding engineers to avoid hot cracking in practice. Furthermore, it represents a very helpful tool for upper level metallurgical and mechanical engineering students

This book presents the current state-of-the-art in welding processes, concentrating on industrially significant processes and taking a wide-ranging and practical approach. This highly accessible work assumes only a limited basic knowledge of welding processes
Rapidsare

Welding Secrets : By Hal Wilson

Welding Secrets. No other book will prevent more accidents. It tells where not to weld and contains 75 photographs, 10 sketches and a wealth of knowledge from 49 years of experience.
Welding Secrets explains why a weld bead shrinks more where it stops than it does where it starts. Pictures of test welds show the difference between "free expansion" and "confined expansion". It explains how stresses, caused by a weld made under confined expansion, can harm the workpiece.
Welding Secrets is a welding guide for the self taught welder, as well as the more experienced welder. It makes a great training manual and is used across the USA by many major manufacturers

Handbook of Mold, Tool and Die Repair Welding
</U>

This book covers an important and frequently overlooked area of welding - the repair of molds, tools and dies. Because two rather different trades overlap in this process - welding and tool making, the materials and techniques involved have tended to be obscured. For many years, toolmakers and tool users have had to rely on the small number of specialist welders who do understand exactly what welding repair involves and have the skills to carry it out.
Understanding the technical side of tool steels is frequently a problem for welders and understanding the practical side of welding can be a problem for machinists. This book has been written so that specialists from both sides can get to grips with the techniques and procedures involved

Iron Melting Cupola Furnaces for the Small Foundry
</U>

This is a nice book on how to build a realatively small cupola for melting iron. It is well written, and he has a couple of pictures in the book. This is not a beginners furnace however and it requires a cutting torch, welder, and a small lathe for a couple of parts. Also, iron in general is rather dangerous for a beginner, so start with lead or Aluminum. For info on melting Aluminum, check out ... In general, I would recommend this book for reference if you are a beginning foundry person, but if you are really serious, go for it.

Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces, and Kilns
</U>

Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces, & Kilns" is a do-it-yourselfers dream book, showing beginners how to make highly efficient gas burners inexpensively. These burners use simple gas accelerators as their central operating principle. All that is needed is a $2 MIG tip and some plumbing parts. This eliminates the need for a blower to supply combustion air, allowing the burners to be built in any size. Burners are featured, which are small enough to be used for a jewelry torch or large enough to heat any ceramic kiln. Because these burners are both powerful and portable, they can be combined with low cost space age insulating materials and common containers to build light compact heating equipment. Also described is a blacksmith's forge that can be carried anywhere and stored under a workbench; a portable metal melting furnace; a portable farrier's forge; a portable glass furnace/glory hole; and a mobile hot-work station that aids in combining several crafts. The burners and equipment provide an inexpensive way to get started in blacksmithing, foundry work, ceramics, or glasswork. General information and specific designs are given, enabling the craftsperson to build equipment tailored to their own desires.

Rotational Molding Technology
</U>

This new book clarifies and quantifies many of the technical interactions in the process. It distinguishes itself from other books on the subject by being a seamless story of the advanced aspects of the rotational molding process. There are seven chapters within the book. The U.S. market for rotational molding products was one billion pounds in the year 2000. The growth of the rotational molding industry has grown at 10 to 15% per year. With this growth has come an increasing need for details on the complex, technical aspects of the process.

Building a Gas Fired Crucible Furnace

Good book - short but complete - with the information you need to build a foundry furnace. My only caveat is that it is dated. There are burner designs that are simpler and much easier to build, better ways of making refractory, better designs for lid lift mechanisms -- well you get the idea.

Handbook of Lost Wax or Investment Casting
</U>

Sopcak's "Handbook" is oriented more to the equipment than the processes. From building a kiln and a variety of casting machines, to vacuum investment and all the way through to rubber molds, for the craftsman on a budget, there's an inexpensive altrnative to commercial equipment laid out in detail. While spartan in execution, most essential processes are covered in enough detail for a rank beginner. For an experienced caster, some of the ideas presented may be helpful for problem solving or experimentation.

مجموعة كتب Powder Metallurgy
Handbook of Powder, Science & Technology

Now in its second edition, this authoritative reference provides comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals of powder science and technology and builds upon them, emphasizing practical applications in the design, production, processing, and handling of applications. The book features contributors from twenty-one internationally renowned and respected professionals and researchers in the field. Their chapters focus on problem solving, but also provide a solid link between theory and practise. Organized in a logical manner, this handbook begins by introducing the reader to the fundamentals of solid particulates, covering the concept of particle size measurement and analysis, surface characteristics, structural properties of packings of particles, and rheological properties of particles. The remainder of the book provides a thorough treatment of known and potential applications of powder technology, including a literature survey, problem applications, case histories, and design parameters. Extensive updates have been made to all of the chapters, references, problems, and case histories, reflecting new developments in the technology of powder science. Additions to the book include three new chapters on: health hazards for respirable dust, dense phase pneumetic conveying, and dust explosions and fire hazards. The Handbook of Powder Science and Technology, Second Edition can be used as a reference for those who have little or no experience in powder technology. It serves equally well as a manual and handbook for technologists, design engineers and scientists who have previous experience with powders. It is also a useful reference for research or as a textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate courses.

Mechanical Metallurgy

metallurgy is one of the oldest established branches of materials science, and science in general. Yet many of the underlying principles, such as dislocation theory and plasticity, have only been explored within the last 100 years or so. As such, there is a wealth of information in metallurgy that one could learn. This book by G. Dieter is one of the better books to use to learn about metallurgy. Coming in at 800 pages even, this book is a thorough study of the principles behind mechanical metallurgy and is appropriate for both students in the field and practicing engineers. The book provides complete mathematical treatments of numerous subjects within mechanical metallurgy, including crystallographyof defects, thermodynamics of plastic flow, kinetics, etc... The book is somewhat old-fashioned in that it leaves out more modern topics such as the use of computer simulations in metallurgy. Because of this, the book does not deserve 5 stars. But due to its breadth and coverage of other topics, it deserves 4 out of 5 stars.
